Family allowances for the self-employed from January 1, 2013

From January 1, 2013, self-employed individuals nationwide are entitled to family allowances. Finally, this gap is closed!
Contribution assessment starting from January 1, 2013
To finance the family allowances, all self-employed individuals will pay a percentage contribution on their annual income subject to AHV up to CHF 126,000.- to the Family Compensation Fund.
Who can claim family allowances?
If one parent is already receiving family allowances, there is no need to take any action. However, if no one is currently receiving family allowances for the children, you can check on the following website if you are now eligible to apply for family allowances: Family Allowances Check
The law allows only a one-time payment of an allowance per child. If multiple people are eligible to apply, from 2013 the following order applies:
- who is employed (self-employed or not)
- who has or had parental custody until the child comes of age
- who lives or has lived predominantly with the child until they come of age
- who can receive allowances in the child's canton of residence
- who has the higher AHV-liable income from non-self-employed work
- who has the higher AHV-liable income from self-employed work
